Winemaking philosophy «

Napa Valley was formed millions of years ago by  tectonic plate movement and violent volcanic eruptions that created the rugged Vaca mountain range to the east and pristine Mayacamas  range to the west.  Both frame the valley floor that runs approximately 26 miles from north to south. CourAvant is located mid-valley on the southern border of the St. Helena AVA at the base of the Mayacamas and the northern reaches of the famed Rutherford Bench.  Given its unique location, the vineyard benefits from both the intricate qualities of volcanic soil eroded from the mountain and the famed St. Helena alluvial fan on the valley floor.  When combined, the vineyard embodies an individual diversity of distinct soil types matched to specific clonal selections of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vines were planted in the early 1990s and lend an old-vine character to the classic Left Bank Bordeaux-style that we endeavor to preserve accented by the personality of Napa Valley. We strive to enhance your ultimate dining pleasure by carefully merging the qualities of meticulous vineyard care with an old-fashioned hands-on and laid-back winemaking regimen.

2021 CourAvant Proprietary Red «

Our 2021 CourAvant Proprietary Red Wine presents a bit of departure in the blend to better reflect the vintage’s character and the complex nature of our estate Merlot.  For this vintage, the blend is 50% each of estate Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, supporting an increased focus on the unique personality of our estate Merlot and to better represent the internationally acclaimed character of vintage 2021 in Napa Valley.  A translucent glow meets the eye reflecting the distinctive combination of garnet accented by crimson hues.  On the nose you will experience the inclusion of rich, bold and bright underpinnings accented by complex notes of blackberry, black cherry and spice with a touch of sweet oak undertones.  The palate is savory in nature with complementary brightness, depth and fleshy mouthfeel.  Both red and black berries emerge as in prior vintages, along with additional notes of pomegranate, cranberry and sweet tannins to coat the mouth.  The finish carries forward the layered complexity of the palate as a multifaceted confluence of balance, structure and length with integrated expressions of black fruits for depth and red for brightness.  Overall, the integration of the nose, palate and finish combine to reveal a classic style of Left Bank Bordeaux with our vintage-to-vintage Napa Valley twist.  A wine to enjoy in its relative youth, but one that will continue to grow and mature in the cellar for the next two or more decades.  While a charred rare steak is always a good pairing to our Proprietary Red Wine, the additional layers of complexity exhibited with the 2021 vintage, suggests you not overlook a medium-rare prime rib or roast saddle of lamb to accentuate its character.
